Herdade em Grândola

The project aimed at preparing Herdade de Murtais da Outra Banda for the transition from forestry to housing and recreational use.

The job involved the drawing up of a Master Plan for the entire estate and a preliminary study for the area around the house. ACB’s main contribution was the invention of the link to the house and the introduction of a patio within the farm structure.

The Preliminary Study enhanced the entrance and access roads, while creating a setting for the accommodation and social areas (gardens, vegetable garden, orchard, agricultural facilities, stables, riding enclosure, paddocks and solar panel area). It retained the traditional cork oak production and increased the natural components of the slopes and the creeks, while at the same time providing protection against fires. All the outdoor areas were designed bearing in mind water consumption, so as to ensure the area around the house consisted of watered but self-sufficient vegetation.

The Master Plan proposed a way of organising the entire estate, that included the zoning of the homogeneous areas (the area around the house, the forestry production area and the nature conservation area) and the defining of the forestry infrastructure (road network, sectioning and water points). The Plan also included management proposals for each area and suggestions as to complementary productive activities.
