Quinta das Lágrimas, Coimbra

The current project covers an area of 900m2, facing west. In the past it had an olive press with a large wheel propelled by the water running through a channel that comes out of the so called Tank of Tears. Left over from the olive press is a 0.70m high plinth, supporting two 1.60m diameter slotted stones over which the oil ran into the olive bins, still embedded in the plinth.

The Client wished to create 3 private gardens for the hotel suites, offering maximum privacy and requiring minimum maintenance. It was also necessary to adjust the gardens to the hotel’s façade, since the three French windows give on to the gardens and will be their only link to the inside. Privacy will be achieved by building three large trellis walls and planting cypress hedges to separate the gardens from the road joining the car park to the reception and from each other.

There are 6 millstones in the area that will be moved and be half-buried, upright, in the cypress hedge line. The two large stones will be placed flat on the lawn as sculptures, a frozen memory of their former use.
